Tap To Call

profileimgHello, and welcome to my little corner of the internet! As you have probably gathered, I am Jessi, a freelance writer currently based in Houston, Texas. I’ve taken some time to compile some of the most frequent questions I receive from clients. If I don’t answer your question(s) below, please don’t hesitate to e-mail me!

Q: What makes you qualified to write professionally?

A: I graduated from The Ohio State University with a BA in English in 2007. For the next five years I taught a writing and rhetoric course to high school students (AP Language & Composition, for those who are curious). While teaching I also received my M.Ed. Following that, I began working as a marketing coordinator at The Houston Museum of Natural Science.

Q: So you don’t do this full time?

A: No, writing has always been my passion and my hobby, but I also love being a part of the larger workforce. Plus, you know, the benefits are nice too. My current job at the Museum allows me to regularly write, revise, edit, and promote various publications that are meant for both web and print, which keeps my skills sharp.

Q: How much do you charge?

A: Well that’s a complicated question, but I will give you the simple answer. I don’t know. How much I charge is determined by a number of factors, including project type, project size, and how quickly you need the project completed. Some projects that are research-intensive (a non-fiction novel, for example) will cost more than those that are fairly straightforward (editing a cover letter). If you want to know what your particular project will cost, shoot me an e-mail and describe your project.

Q: Do you charge by the page, by the word, or by the hour?

A: It depends on the project. Longer projects tend to be charged by the page, whereas shorter projects are by the word, and still others are charged holistically or for overall time spent. If a project is research intensive, it’s less likely to be charged by the word and more likely to be charged by the hour. If you want to know what your specific project will cost, just send me an e-mail and we can work out the particulars.

Q: Do I have to be from Houston to receive your services?

A: Absolutely not! I regularly work with people from all around the world. Just don’t expect to discuss your novel over coffee if you’re from Venice (unless you want to fly me to Venice, of course).

Q: Can I see writing samples first?

A: Sure! Just click on the Portfolio tab!

Q: What kind of turn-around do you have?

A: Well, again, that depends. It takes a lot longer to write a novel than it takes to write a résumé. I will work with you to determine a timeline that works for both of us.

Q: Do you have any particular areas of expertise?

A: My background is primarily in education, and I could probably write about that until my fingers fall off, but I also have done extensive business writing, web content writing, marketing, and creative writing.

Q: Aggies or Longhorns?

A: Neither. I’m Ohio born and raised and will be a Buckeye until the day I die. Sorry, Texas.
